Y Series Combat Robots

 About the Y Series
The Y series combat robots are the third generation to be deployed by the C Quadrant Defenders. The versatility of the W series had been proven on the ground, but were both heavy and limited in terms of obstacle traversal. A bipedal design was explored to improve on these deficiencies. Weight considerations required that the bulky torso be streamlined, and most of the armor plating be discarded. A low center of mass could no longer be counted on as the main source of stability while carrying weapons or other objects. Instead, an active balancing system allowed a thinner humanoid shaped robot to walk with ease while under load across uneven terrain. The resulting design is far more agile and nimble than preceding combat robots in service with the CQD.

The Y1's head contains cameras and a general purpose sensor package to provide an excellent field of visibility for remote operators. Controllers are able to command Y1 units over vast distances thanks to a long range antenna. The backpack contains batteries, allowing the robot to operate in the field for significant lengths of time between recharging. Active balancing routines required a more powerful on-board processor than earlier combat robots, which gave programmers and designers more computational overhead for implementing automated tasks. Robot controllers can rely on the Y1's automation far more often to accomplish simple tasks. As well, the Y series is far more general pupose in its design, due to having so many points of articulation, giving the robot the ability to handle many tasks without direct human guidance. They aren't the pinnacle of combat robot design, but they represent a major step forward and a staple of CQD operations, suppmenting troops wherever possible.

A lineup of Y1 series combat robots.

A Y1 carrying a gauss cannon. This white one is the original prototype.

The Y1 series was designed to handle the weight and awkward proportions of larger weapons while walking.

The rotary magnetic field generator attaches to the rear of the arm as a counterbalance.

This early blue Y1 carries a portable XIP cannon. Unit 09 is an example equipped with additional armor plating on its legs.

A gray unit equipped with a rifle. Compered to its W series predecessors, the forearm armor has been reduced to save weight.

The slim frame of the Y1 series is derived from that of the W1 specifically. The battery backpack and antenna are direct copies from the W series.

This red unit features extra lower body armor to improve durability.

The rotary magazine machine gun has been paint-matched to this Y1.

Y1 unit 57 carrying a portable rocket launcher.

We've seen this particular Y1 undergoing repairs before.

A few examples of the variety of colors in circulation.

The Y1 is a surprisingly flexible and versatile combat robot.

 Meta Description
The Y series resulted in me looking at the Z series and extrapolating what an earlier, less armored, more awkward bipedal robot might look like. Unlike other robots I've built with multiple major variations, I've kept the Y1 more or less the same. I really wanted this one to feel closer to a prototype pressed into service. Designing an ecosystem around a combat robot that can't fly into battle on its own was a fun challenge, and these are still some of my favorites. For the longest time, I had only built the white chassis example. Other color variations followed only when parts became available.
